Understanding Small Family Homes in California
A Small Family Home (SFH) in California is defined as a facility or home that provides 24-hour care for six or fewer children who have mental health disabilities, or developmental or physical disabilities, and who require special care and supervision as a result of their disabilities. SFHs may also accept children with special health care needs.
Operating an SFH requires obtaining a license from the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). The licensing process involves attending an in-person orientation, submitting an application, undergoing a home inspection, and meeting specific personal, safety, and space requirements.
